Knut Edstrand Byggnads AB in Smedstorp has been building on Österlen, in south-east Skåne, since 1961. It is a family business in its third generation that does most of the work with its own people: groundwork, masonry, carpentry and metalwork.
The assignment came through JS Sverige and covered photography and film for Edstrands' marketing. The plan was one single day and fourteen stops. We started at eight at a foundation in Brösarp and finished at the warehouse in Smedstorp eight hours later. In between: a house going up by Vik's fishing harbour, window replacement and facade renovation in Simrishamn, a school project in Ystad, roofing work and drone footage over two of the sites.
What made the day possible was the schedule. Edstrands drove with me all day and had briefed every site manager. When I stepped out of the car people knew why I was there, and I could spend the time on the pictures instead of explaining myself.
A building site rarely looks like a brochure. It is scaffolding, machines and people with a job to do. That is exactly what I want to show: the craft and the people as they look on an ordinary Tuesday.
Construction is one of the fields I work in the most. I photograph, film and fly drones for building companies on Österlen, in Simrishamn and across the rest of Skåne.
