I think it's on assignments like these that my skills and experience matter most. I love the setup and the tempo: "Here's a truck about to empty a bin, here's the man driving it, you've got 10 minutes to produce film and stills for our communication." I love it!
Trust me, I understand the idea of letting an image grow, finding exactly the right angle and waiting for the light. But the risk is that by the time you do, you've lost that spark in the eyes of the person in front of the camera. Sometimes extreme time pressure is the best thing that can happen to a picture.
In Kristianstad we shot a bit of everything. The driver emptying garden waste now that the season is starting, the recycling centre and the offices where customer support and the rest of the team sit. We also visited the newly opened Returen — Renhållningen Kristianstad's reuse facility, where donated items are repaired, cleaned and resold. The whole chain under one roof, with the municipal day-activity programme handling the preparation work.
If I ever stop being a photographer, day-activity work is where I'll go next. It's about meaningful occupation for people who need structure and a context to show up for every day. You take that for granted until you see it up close.
